My Life As A Gamer

I’m super proud of myself when I think of the path I took to get where I am today as a Twitch streamer. I may not be Ninja or Tfue, but I’m nowhere near the bottom of the pack either, so that’s something, right?

My Childhood

Growing up with five sisters was a nightmare, especially because we all looked so much alike. Sometimes it was as if I didn’t even have a name of my own. I suppose you could say that gaming was my way of differentiation. Again, there were five other girls, so there was nothing unique about playing with dolls.

I remember being really drawn in by those over the top commercials and the one gaming magazine I got my paws on. I didn’t really have any games of my own, but I had a friend who did, and whenever I went over to his house, I’d lose myself on the Nintendo 64.

I loved Super Smash Bros, and I was pretty good. Well… I was better than he was at least. My favorite character was Samus, and I didn’t even know she was a girl yet.

Teen Years

By the time I got to high school, Nintendo had released several Game Boy’s, the Nintendo GameCube, and the Nintendo Wii. Motion controls really got me. Games like The Legend of Zelda, Pikmin, Super Smash Bros, and Metroid were some of my faves.

The GameCube was the first console I owned, thanks to my favorite aunt. Based on my childhood and teen experiences, Nintendo has always had a special place in my heart, right beside chocolate. Seriously, if you want me to do anything, just give me free chocolate.

Discovering Twitch

I decided to do Computer Science as my college major because I fell in love with computers during high school. Though I was a Nintendo girl at heart, I wanted to branch out and see what the world of gaming had to offer, and I wasn’t disappointed.

PlayStation and Xbox wowed me with entries such as God of War and Halo, but the graphics of the PC were something else. It’s why I wanted to study programming too. I wanted to make my own narrative experiences for the world.

As college progressed though, I felt more interested in playing the games and making them. Sometimes I’d play in front of my friends, and they were always super entertained. I remember one of them said, “Girl, you need to be on Twitch,” during a Dark Souls session.

I wasn’t oblivious to what Twitch was, but I didn’t think I was all that entertaining. That’s because I didn’t realize I was already rocking the formula with my friends. I had been providing entertainment and interacting with my audience, right?

Joining Twitch

I wanted to make sure I did it right, so I got a part-time job so I could get some more games and some equipment. During this time, I got into online gaming, and it was both fun and weird. It was fun because I loved playing video games, but there were some weird things.

For example, I’d join a lobby, and I’d hear a bunch of guys talking. Now, I love a good conversation, and I’d always try to join in by virtue of being interested, but then things always got weird.

They always got quiet or said stuff to impress me instead of just treating me like another player. Now, this wasn’t always the case, but I noticed that being a girl made things different for me online.

Anyways, I created my Twitch channel, and at first, I thought I made a mistake. My channel had a colossal maximum of two viewers in the first couple of months.

Finding the Element

I decided to brainstorm to think of what I could do. I’ve always been a huge fan of cosplay, and I’ve worn a couple of convincing costumes as well. It always made me feel as if I was in the game, taking on the fictional world’s challenges.

So, I thought, “Why not bring this to the channel?” First, it was just parts of costumes. Eventually, it evolved into doing impressions and personalities. After all that, something just clicked, and my channel took off.

Income

Some of my viewers routinely asked me where my donation button was as they wanted to reward me. Obviously, there were the pervs who wanted me to get naked on camera, but I ignore those people.

I decided to throw in cheers, donation, and subscription options, and my viewers and followers used and continue to use them. In fact, Twitch is now my job, and I couldn’t be happier. I play video games and get paid. Isn’t that awesome?
